Build locations and backgrounds
Make places useful to the story and let scene headers show the right background.
Open story editorCreate a place
- Add a Location with a specific name, useful description, and optional background image. The name and precise keywords identify the place in the chat.
- Add important rooms as Sublocation tidbits attached to that Location. Give a room its own image if it needs a distinct background; otherwise it can show its parent location's image.
- Give each sublocation a short, spoiler-safe purpose, and add Other names only for real alternative names. Put hidden history or secrets in separate entries instead of the location directory.
Use scene headers to establish where play is happening
A line such as [Day 1 - Blackwood Manor - Evening] establishes Blackwood Manor as the scene location when the name matches a defined place. A room can be named in the same header, for example [Day 1 - Blackwood Manor - Evening] (Library). A recognized header takes priority over a different place mentioned later in the prose, so a passing reference to the docks does not replace the manor background.
AiRP reads the written scene to select a background. A reader's movement can also change it. A sublocation image takes precedence while that room is current; a room without an image uses the parent location's image. A location with no image has no background to show.
Best practices
- Use the defined place name consistently in headers. A vague word such as hall is likely to fit several rooms.
- A sublocation being mentioned for reference does not, by itself, mean the player traveled there. Describe the move or establish the new scene when the location really changes.
- Check a scene that mentions a second place in passing; the displayed background should still reflect the current scene.
