A practical guide to AI RP
What is AI roleplay?
AI roleplay, often shortened to AI RP, is interactive storytelling in which you control a character and an AI model responds as the other characters, the narrator, or both. Instead of choosing from a fixed set of dialogue options, you write what your character says and does. The story changes around those choices.
How AI roleplay works
A roleplay begins with a scenario: a setting, a cast, and an opening situation. You choose or create the person you will play, then respond in your own words. The model reads the scenario and the conversation so far, then writes the next part of the scene as everyone else.
The result is closer to collaborative improvisation than to a conventional video game. There is no single correct branch. You can follow the premise, surprise the cast, slow down for a quiet conversation, or take the plot in a direction its author did not predict.
AI roleplay versus ordinary character chat
Character chat usually starts with one personality and a greeting. An AI roleplay can include that, but it can also give the conversation a wider structure: several characters, locations, world rules, secrets, and an event already in motion.
AiRP is built around stories rather than isolated bots. Authors can define a full cast and lorebook, while players still control only their own character. That separation makes it easier for the model to keep track of who knows what and whose choices it should not write for.
What makes an AI RP feel good to play?
- A clear opening: the first scene gives you something to react to without deciding your response for you.
- Room for agency: the premise creates pressure and possibilities instead of forcing one outcome.
- Distinct characters: each person has their own voice, knowledge, motives, and relationship to the situation.
- Useful world context: locations and lore appear when they matter rather than burying every reply under the whole setting.
- The right model: different language models favor different pacing and styles. AiRP lets a player switch models during a chat without restarting the story.
Memory in a long AI roleplay
A model can only read a limited amount of text at once. As a conversation grows, the oldest turns eventually move outside that working context. Good roleplay systems preserve the important parts—relationships, promises, discoveries, and changes to the world—in a shorter form the model can keep using.
AiRP summarizes older scenes into editable memories. Authors can also put durable facts in a lorebook and attach them to characters or locations. See the detailed explanation in the models and context guide.
Public stories, private conversations
Publishing a story makes its scenario available for other people to play. It does not publish their conversations. Each player begins a separate chat and can take the same premise somewhere completely different.
You can read public scenarios without an account. Starting a scene requires an account because the conversation and the character you play need somewhere private to live. The About AiRP page explains models, credits, imports, and content rules.
