Build the foundation

  1. Sign in, select New story, and give the story a title and a short tagline that tells readers what kind of experience they are choosing.
  2. Use Plot for the situation that is true when play begins: setting, conflict, important context, and the player's possible place in it. Use Rules for standing directions such as point of view, tone, pacing, and respecting player choices.
  3. Add the main cast, locations, and any tidbits that should become relevant only in certain scenes.
  4. Use Story header for an automatic scene tracker, story points, or character meters instead of writing header-format instructions in Rules. The Story headers, points, and character meters guide walks through each control.
  5. Write at least one opening that puts the reader in a specific moment and gives them room to act. Review the story page and its content labels before publishing.

Decide where each fact belongs

Plot, Rules, and core cast descriptions take space in the model's context every turn. Put only the essentials there. Use tidbits for history, secrets, relationships, and details that matter in particular situations. The editor's context bar shows the combined story budget, in characters and tokens, and the recommended size for each half of the story.

The question-mark guide in the story editor can walk you through the actual fields while you work. A private draft lets you inspect and revise the result before sharing it.

Best practices

  • Give each cast member a distinct motive and voice rather than a list of interchangeable adjectives.
  • An opening should create a decision, not make the player's first decision for them.
  • Check the published view for spoilers in reader-visible text and images.
