Write characters that stay consistent

Give each character a stable core and room to respond naturally.

Write the core description

A cast description is available throughout the story. Give the character a role, a few concrete traits, what they want, what they fear or resist, and how they usually speak or act. Describe behavior someone could recognize in a scene rather than stacking abstract adjectives.

For example, ‘answers difficult questions with a joke, but checks the exits before sitting down’ gives the model something to play. Keep a concealed motive or old betrayal in a Secret tidbit so the AI knows the truth while keeping it hidden from readers until its reveal condition is met.

Keep perspectives separate

A relationship card belongs under the character whose feelings it describes. Select the other character, or the reader's character, as its target. The connection names the target's role in the owner's life: if Mara's mother is Ilya, put the card under Mara, target Ilya, and enter ‘mother’. This does not assert that Ilya feels the same way.

Write secrets as facts that require an actual reveal event. A secret entering the narrator's context does not mean every character has learned it. Keep the plot and reader-facing descriptions free of unrevealed spoilers.

Best practices

  • Avoid generic character aliases such as ‘the girl’ that could refer to several people.
  • Use a separate relationship card for each character's perspective when both sides matter.
  • Test a calm conversation and a stressful scene to see whether the voice remains recognizable.
